Our Community
Elgin has a public library; Homestead-low-rent housing; four churches; K-12 public school, K-6 St. Boniface Elementary and 7-12 Pope John Central Catholic; two medical clinics: Elgin Veterans' Medical Clinic (services provided by Boone County Hospital in Albion) and AMH Medical Clinic (services provided by Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh); one dentist at the Elgin Dental Clinic, Dr. John Williams, DDS from Albion; and two veterinary clinics: Antelope County Veterinary Clinic and Town & Country Veterinary Clinic.
Elgin has an attractive city park, east of Highway 14 on North Street, northeast part of town, with a playground, swimming pool, camping facilities, restrooms/showers, two picnic shelters and a gazebo.
Be sure and stop at the Centennial Garden, located on Highway 14 on the south edge of town next to the public library.
Our schools and churches schedule many events, along with the Elgin Chamber of Commerce/Community Club.
Our annual community celebration, Vetch Days, is scheduled in June. Vetch Days consists of a kids carnival and races, BBQ, parade, community garage sales, pool party, etc. We have started a cruise night recently which added to Vetch Days festivities. Also new this year was a paint ball tournament. Vetch Days brought many people home and was a great opportunity for the sharing of memories about Elgin.
Elgin High and St. Boniface select a date in June for their annual Alumni Banquets.
Pope John Central Catholic holds their annual Alumni Banquet and ball tournament in July.
Traditional events include a fly-in breakfast held in July, annual craft fair always held the first weekend in October; United Methodist turkey and ham dinner in October, and St. Boniface has their traditional Thanksgiving Day Festival.
Street dances held in the fall include the St. Boniface Elementary back-to-school bash and the Firemen's annual fund-raising dance.
